Kashgar and Hotan are the principal silk production areas in Xinjiang, and the Uyghurs have a long history of raising silkworms, reeling silk, and weaving. Upon their arrival in the small town of Luopu along the Hotan-Ruoqiang Railway, Martin and Li Lu (Lucia) were immediately struck by the magnificent desert scenery and the attraction of a kind of silk called "the Atlas Silk." This 1,000-year-old silk, once a significant material for traditional Uyghur attire, has been revitalized by designers. Modern communication technologies have facilitated the dissemination of these artistic silk products to a broader audience, establishing a connection between the past and the present.
